Distinctive octagonal chimney stacks and a Georgian facade give the house a stately air, in fact it is the friendliest of places to stay. Paris gives you a delicious breakfast with plenty of fresh fruit and is happy to cater for any special requests. The spacious and light-filled bedrooms look out over the lovely garden - a favourite haunt for local birds. Bergh Apton is a conservation village and you are in the heart of it.

There is plenty of scope for cycling and the twelve Wherryman's Way circular walks are within easy access. The Norfolk Broads are close by and several have boat trips in the Summer months. Guests are also welcome to use the hard tennis court. The Anteros Centre (www.anteros.co.uk) runs art courses and is two miles from Washingford House.

Norwich provides a wealth of historical interest with some of the finest medieval architecture in Britain. Its two Cathedrals, Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery and Dragon Hall - a recently restored Medieval Merchants Trading Hall - are all worth a visit.
